Nature‐Inspired Substrate‐Independent Omniphobic and Antimicrobial Slippery Surfaces

چکیده
Inspired by the carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plant, a range of highly liquid repellent lubricant-infused surfaces has been devised (low water droplet contact angle hysteresis and sliding values). This entails matching functional pulsed plasma polymer nanolayers with appropriate slippery lubricants. A molecular-level structure–behavior relationship is developed, highlighting importance favorable aromatic–aliphatic intermolecular interactions between coating lubricant. Fluorinated nanocoatings resist wetting liquids, spanning wide surface tensions (including pentane, motor oil, water, i.e., omniphobicity). In case natural antimicrobial compound-infused (e.g., essential oil cinnamaldehyde), multifunctional performance attained combining high repellency (self-cleaning) simultaneous strong antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus Gram-negative Escherichia coli (log10 reduction > 7). addition, these easily repel variety everyday liquids foodstuffs such as tomato ketchup honey).

Robust omniphobic surfaces.
Superhydrophobic surfaces display water contact angles greater than 150 degrees in conjunction with low contact angle hysteresis. Microscopic pockets of air trapped beneath the water droplets placed on these surfaces lead to a composite solid-liquid-air interface in thermodynamic equilibrium. Previous experimental and theoretical studies suggest that it may not be possible to form similar fully...

We provide a simple design chart framework to predict the apparent contact angle on a textured surface in terms of the equilibrium contact angle on a chemically identical smooth surface and details of the surface topography. For low surface tension liquids such as methanol (gamma(lv) = 22.7 mN/m) and octane (gamma(lv) = 21.6 mN/m), a solid-liquid-air composite interface on a textured surface is...

Anti-icing surfaces have a critical footprint on daily lives of humans ranging from transportation systems and infrastructure to energy systems, but creation of these surfaces for low temperatures remains elusive. Non-wetting surfaces and liquid-infused surfaces have inspired routes for the development of icephobic surfaces. However, high freezing temperature, high ice adhesion strength, and hi...

Losing contact: Omniphobic surfaces can be readily produced by acid-catalyzed graft polycondensation of dimethyldimethoxysilane (PDMS). Droplets show a very small contact angle hysteresis as well as a low sliding angle of only a few degrees. The nm-thick PDMS layer is neither easily washed away nor depleted. This method offers a novel approach towards the preparation of super-liquid-repelling s...
متن کاملDropwise Condensation of Low Surface Tension Fluids on Omniphobic Surfaces
Compared to the significant body of work devoted to surface engineering for promoting dropwise condensation heat transfer of steam, much less attention has been dedicated to fluids with lower interfacial tension. A vast array of low-surface tension fluids such as hydrocarbons, cryogens, and fluorinated refrigerants are used in a number of industrial applications, and the development of passive ...
